Architects of matter, excellence in every nuance

Meet Sylvaine Delacourte

How did you discover your passion for perfume? At what moment did you know you wanted to make it your career?

I was working at Guerlain, where I held several positions.
One day, I asked to take a perfume training course. I was then advised to take classes at Cinquième Sens with Monique Schlienger.

That is where I had an epiphany. I literally fell in love with this universe, and I discovered that I had a very good olfactory memory.

It was obvious: the door to this wonderful world had just opened, and I wanted to learn everything.
After creating the international perfume training program at Guerlain, I became an evaluator alongside Jean-Paul Guerlain, and was then appointed Director of Perfume Creation.

What drives you the most in creation? What are your sources of inspiration and your favorite raw materials?

What I love the most is achieving a new accord I had dreamed of, creating a fragrance from a blank page, and shaping it with perfumers with whom I share a true connection and a common language.

I particularly love vanilla, musks, orange blossom, citrus fruits, certain woods, and solar flowers.

How do you know when a perfume is complete?

When I wear it and receive compliments.
That is often the sign that it has found its balance.

What was your creative intention through this new adventure?

I wanted to work on different interpretations of my favorite materials, to create unprecedented combinations, to explore raw materials against the grain.

What particular challenge did you take on while working on the different perfumes?

The difficulty, after having created the accords I wanted to work on, was to give them tenacity and a powerful sillage while preserving the elegance and finesse of each perfume.

What emotion would you like people to feel when discovering the perfumes?

I would like people to say: "I have never smelled this accord!"

For each perfume to be perceived as original, harmonious, and for it to make you want to wear it every day. I love it when people tell me it leaves an elegant and recognizable sillage.

Do you have a striking olfactory memory from your childhood?

Violets, waffles from the North, the scent of mimosa and the beach in the South of France.
My mother's Shalimar, lipstick, and rice powder.

Finally, what are your passions outside of perfume?

Traveling since always, exhibitions, cinema, classical ballets.
