Meet Sylvaine Delacourte

How did you discover your passion for perfume? When did you know you wanted to make it your profession?

I was working at Guerlain, where I held several positions.
One day, I asked to attend a perfume training course. I was advised to take classes at Cinquième Sens with Monique Schlienger.

That’s when I had a revelation. I completely fell in love with this world and discovered that I had a very good olfactory memory.

It was clear to me: the door to this wonderful world had just opened, and I wanted to learn everything.
After creating the international fragrance training program at Guerlain, I became an evaluator working with Jean-Paul Guerlain, then was appointed Director of Fragrance Creation.

What drives you most in the creative process? What are your sources of inspiration and favorite raw materials?

What I love most is bringing to life a new accord I had dreamed of, creating a fragrance from a blank page and shaping it with perfumers with whom I share a true bond and a common language.

I particularly love vanilla, musks, orange blossom, citrus fruits, certain woods, and solar flowers.

How do you know when a perfume is finished?

When I wear it and receive compliments.
That’s often the sign that it has found its balance.

What was your creative intention with this new venture?

I wanted to work on different interpretations of my favorite raw materials, to create unique combinations, and to explore those ingredients in unexpected ways.

What particular challenge did you face while working on the various fragrances?

Once I had crafted the accords I wanted to explore, the challenge was to give them lasting power and a strong trail while preserving the elegance and finesse of each perfume.

What emotion would you like people to feel when discovering the perfumes?

I would love to hear someone say: “I’ve never smelled this kind of accord before!”

That each fragrance is seen as original and harmonious, and makes people want to wear it every day. I love it when people tell me it leaves an elegant and recognizable trail.

Do you have a memorable scent from your childhood?

Violets, waffles from the North, the scent of mimosa and the beach in the South of France.
Shalimar, my mother’s lipstick and rice powder.

Lastly, what are your passions outside of perfume?

Traveling has always been one of them, as well as exhibitions, cinema, and classical ballet.
